FRIESIAN PERCHERON SPORT HORSE STALLION
The Sandsteads and the Friesian Eventing Horse
In 2008 long time Platteville, Colorado equine professionals, Gary and Connie Sandstead’s latest venture into the world of equine eventing began with the purchase of Effervesence, a Friesian-Percheron stallion with an impressive regal bearing and pedigree. Effervesence is a black, powerful, well balanced, 5 year old horse with the Friesian characteristics of good disposition and his beautiful flowing mane and tail.
This venture is in addition to the Sandstead’s many other equine activities. Their national and international equine activities continue to attract the attention of equine enthusiasts throughout the United States Canada, and Japan. The Sandsteads can be seen in action at a parade with their teams of black matched coach horses or at rodeo or at equine events with their racing chuck wagon horses.
The Friesian eventing horse combines the best of three breeds of horses with the unique style and beauty of the Friesian; the sturdiness of the Percheron; and the refinement of the Thoroughbred. While this combination is not entirely new, it is rare. The result of this combination has been proven to have the style and the extremely good disposition—“likability”—to take someone on a deluxe riding experience.
The reason for the Friesian Eventing Horse’s uniqueness is the little known but generally accepted theory that the Friesian mother and the select Percheron sire gives the resulting foal---“Effervesence”---his dominant Friesian characteristics due to the maternal environmental and genetic dominance. This then also holds true when this type of sire, Effervesence, is crossed on the Thoroughbred mare. This third cross foal then combines the Percheron sire’s structural foundation with their famous good feet and bone, soundness and strength; the Friesian mare’s famous style, presence, disposition and likability; and the Throughbread mare’s refinement, style, cleanness of limb, spirit and endurance; which creates an unparalleled individual with hybrid vigor that gives the rare combination of “action”, style, the flowing Friesian mane and tail characteristics, elegance, soundness, attention to the rider and tractability that is desired for ease of training.
They are breeding him to a select group of Thoroughbred mares from the century old family of mares belonging to Warren and Fran Hammerbeck of Greeley, Colorado. This select book of mares, many of whom have had foals in the Sandstead Ranch equine program, is also the same group of mares that have produced various individuals in the NCAA sanctioned athletic eventing programs. Since this select group of Thoroughbred mares are known to produce these eventing horses, it follows that the cross with Effervesence will be unparallel prospects for all types of eventing. These horses will be excellent at upper level dressage, pattern events, carriage horses and the reliable pleasure and trail horse “par excellence”.
